A Christian cross

Moses is a key character in the Bible and perhaps the most important prophet after Jesus. He was the first abandoned child mentioned in the Scripture. He was also the one who saw God on Mount Sinai with his brothers Aaron.

But the story of Moses goes deeper than this, and this article will discuss the role Moses plays in the Bible. If you’re a Christian, you must know why Moses was a critical figure in the Bible.

1. He Is The Symbol Of God’s Salvation

According to the Old Testament, the people of Israel experienced God’s salvation through Moses. The pivotal moment in the Old Testament- the Exodus- when Jews were led to the Promised Land and became aware of their new identity.

Moses was the man on the frontline for this job. He was the one who stood up to the Pharoah to free God’s people. To make it easy for the Jews to move from slavery toward freedom, God helped Moses part the Red Sea.

2. Significance for Jesus

Moses is an important figure for Christians because Jesus carried out the Law that Moses put forward centuries earlier. When Jesus entered the scene years later, his task was greater than that of Moses. The transfiguration of Jesus from the mountaintop when he sees Elijah and Moses symbolizes that Jesus fulfilled the Law of the preceding prophets.

In fact, the Gospel of Matthew states Jesus as the new Moses.

3. The Pharaoh’s Daughter Raised Moses

Moses’ parents, Jochebed and Amram, were Israelites and slaves in Egypt. The number of Israelites had vastly increased at the time Moses was born. The Pharaoh was afraid that the Israelites would overpower him.

So he ordered his Egyptian men to drown all male infants in the Nile River.  He couldn’t have imagined that he would be defeated by a child raised in his own home.

Fearing that her child would be killed, Moses’ mother trusted God and placed him in a basket, and left it in the river. This basket was found by Pharaoh’s daughter, who drew it out of the water.

Bible study shows that it was Moses who demanded justice from the Pharaoh and parted the Red Sea, so that his people could escape the Pharaoh’s tyranny.
